Planning a funeral in Iowa

A short written plan can make the next conversation easier. You can record preferences and compare providers before deciding whether to buy anything.

Keep a plan where people can find it

The FTC's advance planning guidance recommends writing down your wishes, sharing copies, and reviewing decisions periodically. Keep the plan accessible; a will or safe-deposit box may not be available when arrangements are needed.

Record burial or cremation preferences, the kind of gathering you want, any existing cemetery arrangements, and where relevant documents are held. Planning ahead does not require advance payment.

Make a short provider checklist

The FTC recommends comparing providers using their price lists and total charges. Contact more than one location if time permits. Add practical requirements to your notes: accessibility, language, travel distance for attendees, and religious or cultural needs. Discuss those needs directly before selecting a provider.

Ask who will be your point of contact and which documents the provider needs before arrangements can proceed. Share sensitive family information directly with the provider, not through this directory's correction form.

Before signing a prepaid contract in Iowa

The Iowa Insurance Division states that businesses and sales agents offering pre-need funeral services or merchandise must be licensed with the division. Check with the division before making arrangements.

Ask for written answers about what is covered, where funds are held, whether prices are guaranteed, cancellation and refunds, moving to another area, and what happens if the business closes. The FTC's prepayment questions provide a starting point. Do not assume every future expense is covered. Keep the contract with your plan and tell the person likely to arrange the funeral where to find it.

Bring the plan back to your budget

Mark each preference as essential, optional, or undecided. Ask for the price of the essentials first, then review optional items individually. Use our cost comparison guide to organize the quote and our service options guide to clarify terminology.

Questions about your legal authority to arrange a funeral or the effect of a contract should go to the relevant Iowa authority or a qualified adviser who can review your circumstances.

Download a personal planning checklist

Download the pre-planning funeral checklist (PDF, 3 pages) to organize preferences, contacts, and the location of important documents. This is a blank checklist for your own use, not an online submission form.

Keep completed copies secure and share them only with people you choose. Do not send financial details or completed checklists to this directory. Record a preference as something to discuss with your provider; the checklist does not establish eligibility for donation or permission to scatter cremated remains.
