Understanding funeral costs in Iowa

Start with your right to price information

Under the FTC Funeral Rule, covered funeral providers must give price information by phone. You do not have to give your name first. When you visit to discuss arrangements, you are entitled to an itemized General Price List to keep. You may choose individual goods and services instead of a package.

After you choose arrangements, obtain the written itemized statement before paying. Ask the provider to explain any required purchase in writing. The rule does not cover every cemetery or third-party merchandise seller.

Separate the charges before comparing totals

The FTC cost checklist distinguishes the basic services fee, additional goods and services, and purchases from outside vendors. A package name alone does not tell you what is included.

• Ask what the basic services fee covers.
• List transportation, preparation, facilities, staff, and merchandise separately.
• Ask whether a crematory charge is included.
• For burial, obtain cemetery charges separately, including the space, opening and closing, and any required container.
• Ask which obituary, flower, officiant, and other outside charges are estimates, and whether a handling fee applies.

Use the same request for each provider

Write down the city, your preferred arrangement, and any timing or accessibility needs. Then contact two or more providers with the same request. Keep a simple comparison with four columns: item, included amount, additional amount, and question still unanswered.

Useful questions include: How far does the transportation price cover? Is the quote specific to this location? What could change the total? When is payment due? Ask for an updated total if you change an item before agreeing.

Compare a simpler arrangement if it suits your wishes

You can ask about direct cremation or immediate burial alongside options that include a visitation or ceremony. A lower advertised starting price may exclude items your family wants.
